Against the backdrop of around 30 million day visitors a year, the bulk of visitors concentrates on a manageable number of places. The twelve sights below cover about 90 percent of what first-time visitors look for. If you want more depth, use them as a starting point and go deeper into the city via the sestieri routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. St Mark’s Square (Piazza San Marco)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The only square in Venice officially called a “piazza” \u2013 all the others are “campi”. 180 metres long, framed by the Procuratie arcades, dominated at its eastern end by St Mark’s Basilica. It is often called “Europe’s most beautiful drawing room” \u2013 whether the famous Napoleon quote is historically verified remains disputed. Freely accessible, though very crowded from 10:00 in summer and shadeless and hot in midsummer. An acqua alta hotspot: at water levels from 100 cm it is one of the first places to flood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Insider:<\/strong> Early in the morning between 6:30 and 8:00 the square is almost empty \u2013 photographers from all over the world come precisely then. Seats with a music surcharge at Florian or Quadri can get very expensive; before the caf\u00e9s open you can enjoy the square standing, for free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. St Mark’s Basilica (Basilica di San Marco)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Byzantine-Romanesque basilica from the 11th century, 4,000 m\u00b2 of gold mosaics, the famous horse sculptures above the main portal. In 2026 the basilica operates a ticket and time-slot system: basic entry costs around \u20ac10<\/span>, combination tickets with the Pala d’Oro, museum and Loggia dei Cavalli up to around \u20ac30. Check time slots and options in advance on the official ticket page; without a reservation the wait is often 45\u201390 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Insider:<\/strong> A pre-booked time slot via the official ticket page saves 60\u201390 minutes of queueing. The dress code is strictly enforced: no bare shoulders, no visible knees, no backpack on your back (it must be handed in before the entrance).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Seat of the Republic of Venice from 1297 to 1797. A Gothic fa\u00e7ade facing the lagoon, magnificent halls (Maggior Consiglio, Senate), connections to the Bridge of Sighs and the prisons. The museum ticket currently costs around \u20ac35<\/span>, special routes such as the “Itinerari Segreti” around \u20ac40 (as of 2026). The secret-routes tour takes you into the former administrative, judicial and prison areas \u2013 the more impressive option, but it costs more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Rialto Bridge (Ponte di Rialto)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The oldest of the four bridges across the Grand Canal, completed around 1591 by Antonio da Ponte. A single unsupported arch of Istrian limestone. Souvenir shops line the southern side of the bridge; with supposed “Murano glass”, take a close look at origin and quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Insider:<\/strong> The view of the bridge from the next vaporetto pier to the north (Mercato Rialto) is more photogenic than the view from the bridge itself. At the foot of the bridge by the market hall there are standing bacari with the best cicchetti at fair prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Grand Canal (Canal Grande)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Venice’s 3.8-kilometre S-shaped “main street”, lined with around 170 palazzi from eight centuries. Four bridges (Rialto, Accademia, Scalzi, Costituzione), two gondola ferries (traghetti). No entrance fee \u2013 the best experience is vaporetto line 1 from Santa Lucia station to San Marco (~40 min, standing room at the stern).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Insider:<\/strong> Line 1 travels much more slowly than line 2 and stops at all the palazzo stations \u2013 ideal for first-time visitors. A day pass costs \u20ac25 (as of 2026), a 75-minute ride \u20ac9.50.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Bridge of Sighs (Ponte dei Sospiri)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Connects the Doge’s Palace with the new prisons, built around 1600 (the design is attributed to Antonio Contino). The name goes back to a 19th-century literary interpretation: the condemned are said to have sighed at their last view of the lagoon. Best view: from the Ponte della Paglia on the Riva degli Schiavoni. Inside, the bridge is visited as part of the Doge’s Palace tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. St Mark’s bell tower (Campanile di San Marco)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

99 metres tall and one of Venice’s best-known landmarks. The current tower was rebuilt true to the original after the collapse of 1902. A lift takes you up in 30 seconds; at the top, a panoramic view over St Mark’s Square, the lagoon and, on clear days, as far as the Alps. Entry around \u20ac15<\/span> (as of 2026, check in advance), often long queues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Insider:<\/strong> With good visibility (usually autumn\/winter) you can see the Dolomites \u2013 in midsummer it tends to be hazy. If you don’t want to risk the queue: the alternative view from San Giorgio Maggiore \u2013 cheaper, emptier, almost as good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Santa Maria della Salute<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Baroque votive church at the tip of the Dorsoduro sestiere, built after the plague of 1630. An octagonal plan and a monumental dome that defines Venice’s skyline. Entry to the main church is free, the sacristy with works by Titian and Tintoretto ~\u20ac6. Reachable with vaporetto line 1 (Salute stop) or by traghetto from the San Marco bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Insider:<\/strong> On 21 November (Festa della Madonna della Salute) a floating bridge is built across the Grand Canal \u2013 one of the finest days of the Venetian year, with few tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. San Giorgio Maggiore<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Island church by Andrea Palladio (1566), opposite St Mark’s Square on its own lagoon island. Entry to the church is free, the lift up the campanile around \u20ac8 as a guide price \u2013 and that is one of the finest views of Venice anywhere. Fewer tourists than at the St Mark’s bell tower, with a full view of St Mark’s Square and the postcard skyline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Insider:<\/strong> Reachable in a few minutes from St Mark’s Square with vaporetto line 2. Ideal for the late afternoon (16:00\u201318:00), when the light turns golden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. The Frari (Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Venice’s largest Gothic church (102-metre nave), Franciscan Gothic, home to Titian’s Assumption of the Virgin (Pala dell’Assunta, 1516\u201318) \u2013 perhaps the most important Renaissance altarpiece in the city. Entry \u20ac8<\/span> (seniors \u20ac3, students \u20ac2; the basilica’s own ticket). Rarely crowded, because it sits in the San Polo sestiere away from the St Mark’s\u2013Rialto axis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Insider:<\/strong> Come with covered knees and shoulders \u2013 checks are strict. Inside, don’t miss the wooden choir stalls from the 15th century (1468).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11. Scuola Grande di San Rocco<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Confraternity seat with the largest coherent body of Tintoretto’s work in the world \u2013 more than 60 paintings on the ground floor, in the great hall and in the Sala dell’Albergo, created 1564\u20131588. Entry \u20ac12<\/span> (as of 2026). Pleasantly cool in summer thanks to the stone hall. One of the most intense art experiences in Venice, often underrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

12. Santi Giovanni e Paolo (Zanipolo)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dominican Gothic, known locally as “Zanipolo” \u2013 the pantheon of the Venetian doges, 25 of whom are buried here. Outside, the equestrian statue of the condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni by Verrocchio (1488). Entry approx. \u20ac3.50 (own ticket, check on site). Castello sestiere, combines well with a walk to the Arsenale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Insider:<\/strong> On the campo in front stands one of the city’s few unrestored well heads \u2013 on Saturdays there is a weekly market with local residents, no tourist crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Best times of day:<\/strong> before 9:00 and after 17:00 \u2014 between those times most day guests, groups and excursionists arrive from the mainland and the lagoon routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weekday note:<\/strong> Wednesday and Thursday are noticeably quieter than weekends. Tuesday is a common closing day for many museums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At four sights, in our experience the surcharge for priority entry is definitely worth it: St Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace, the St Mark’s bell tower and, in high season, the Accademia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
