An unusually rich record survives of its commission, construction and decoration: Contarini engaged two architectural workshops in parallel (Matteo Raverti from Milan and the Venetian Bon family) and kept accounts of materials, stonemasons&#8217; commissions and painting work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>painting of the fa\u00e7ade<\/strong> was Contarini&#8217;s particular requirement: the carved Istrian limestone (pietra d&#8217;Istria) was to be covered with gold leaf (hence the name &#8220;Casa d&#8217;Oro&#8221; \u2014 Golden House), ultramarine blue and vermilion \u2014 an extremely costly technique only the richest families could afford. Today this polychromy has faded almost entirely; remnants are kept in the museum. The exterior now shows only the pale stone \u2014 without the original blaze of colour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the death of the last Contarini heirs at the end of the 18th century, the palazzo changed hands several times. In 1845 the Italian dancer <strong>Maria Taglioni<\/strong> bought it and had it radically rebuilt \u2014 she removed the medieval staircase in the courtyard and replaced Gothic elements with neoclassical ones. Nineteenth-century art historians (notably John Ruskin in &#8220;The Stones of Venice&#8221;, 1851) condemned these alterations as cultural damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1894 <strong>Baron Giorgio Franchetti<\/strong> (1865\u20131922) bought the palazzo. Franchetti, heir to a wealthy Italian-Jewish family, commissioned extensive restoration to undo the Taglioni interventions and return the palazzo as far as possible to its Quattrocento state. At the same time he collected Renaissance art, ancient sculpture and furniture \u2014 the basis of today&#8217;s Galleria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Franchetti bequeathed the palazzo and his collection to the Italian state. After his death in 1922, the Ca&#8217; d&#8217;Oro opened as a state museum in 1927 \u2014 the <strong>Galleria Giorgio Franchetti<\/strong>, state-run to this day (not in the municipal MUVE pass).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Architecture \u2014 Venetian late Gothic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ca&#8217; d&#8217;Oro is considered one of the most important surviving examples of &#8220;gotico fiorito&#8221; \u2014 &#8220;flowering Gothic&#8221;, the Venetian variant of late Gothic with Moorish and Byzantine influences. The main characteristics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Asymmetrical fa\u00e7ade<\/strong> \u2014 the main feature that sets the building apart from the later strict symmetry of the Renaissance. The great entrance portal and the loggias are not centred.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Three storeys<\/strong> of differing design \u2014 a ground floor with an open loggia at the water (for loading and unloading merchant ships), and two ornamental storeys above with tracery windows.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The tracery gallery on the first floor:<\/strong> fine stonework with pointed arches, quatrefoils and spiral colonnettes. One of the finest examples of tracery in Venetian Gothic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Crocketed crestings on the roofline:<\/strong> the striking serrated finials on the upper edge of the fa\u00e7ade, typical of Venetian late Gothic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The courtyard:<\/strong> unusually large for Venetian palazzi, with an original well-head of 1427 decorated with allegorical reliefs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John Ruskin praised the Ca&#8217; d&#8217;Oro in &#8220;The Stones of Venice&#8221; as an outstanding example of Venetian Gothic. The courtyard with its well-head<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The route begins in the courtyard \u2014 the palazzo&#8217;s defining outdoor space. The <strong>well-head of 1427<\/strong> was made to Marin Contarini&#8217;s specifications: allegorical reliefs with personified virtues, with small water spouts above. The surrounding floor holds <strong>ancient Roman mosaic fragments<\/strong> from Franchetti&#8217;s collection. On the courtyard walls hang stone fragments from several centuries \u2014 a kind of open-air sculpture gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. First floor \u2014 the Renaissance collection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Via the reconstructed Gothic staircase you reach the first floor \u2014 the main exhibition space with Franchetti&#8217;s Renaissance collection. Admission only individually (guide approx. \u20ac8). EU citizens aged 18\u201325 pay reduced (approx. \u20ac2), under 18 free. First Sunday of the month often free (Domenica al Museo). The Ca&#8217; d&#8217;Oro is much smaller than the Accademia or Doge&#8217;s Palace \u2014 good as a half-day programme item. During restricted routes the visit shortens accordingly.<\/p><\/div><\/details>\n\n<details><summary>Is skip-the-line worth it?<\/summary><div><p>Usually not. The Ca&#8217; d&#8217;Oro is one of Venice&#8217;s quietest state museums \u2014 no long queue even in high season. Online pre-booking adds certainty about your entry time. The one exception: the first Sunday of the month (free entry) is noticeably busier.<\/p><\/div><\/details>\n\n<details><summary>What about the fa\u00e7ade \u2014 was the gilding restored?<\/summary><div><p>No. The original gilding with gold leaf, ultramarine blue and vermilion faded over the centuries through sun, salt and weather. During strong high water, access, the route or opening can still be restricted.
