At its peak thousands worked there; figures of up to around 16,000 <em>arsenalotti<\/em> are often cited. Contemporary and later accounts praise the Arsenale&#8217;s enormous capacity; the tale of a galley fitted out within a single day stands as a symbol of this division of labour. Visiting both in one day gives you a rounded picture of the Venetian state:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Doge&#8217;s Palace:<\/strong> the Republic&#8217;s <em>political<\/em> history \u2014 government halls, justice, diplomacy, display. This is where Venice was governed.<\/li><li><strong>Museo Storico Navale:<\/strong> the Republic&#8217;s <em>material<\/em> power base \u2014 ships, shipyards, trade routes, sea battles. This is where the wealth was earned that the Doge&#8217;s Palace administered.<\/li><li><strong>The Bucintoro as the link:<\/strong> the Doge&#8217;s state galley can be seen as a model in the naval museum; its ceremony (the Sposalizio del Mare) had its political home at St Mark&#8217;s Square and the Doge&#8217;s Palace.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recommended order: first the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.treffpunkt-venedig.de\/en\/venice-museums\/doges-palace\/\">Doge&#8217;s Palace<\/a> (understand the politics), then the naval museum (see the power base).<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The floors: what you see<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ground floor: Lepanto and the Venetian Mediterranean<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first hall is devoted to the <strong>Battle of Lepanto<\/strong> (7 October 1571) \u2014 the sea battle in which the fleet of the Holy League, with Venice as a major partner, defeated the Ottoman fleet. You see original banners, captured weapons, models of the galleys and galleasses. Lepanto counts among the last and greatest galley battles of the Mediterranean \u2014 once you have understood how a galleass worked (an enlarged galley with guns at the bow), you understand Venetian naval engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bucintoro \u2014 the Doge&#8217;s galley<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A centrepiece of the house: a large <strong>model of the Bucintoro<\/strong>, the Doge&#8217;s state galley. Every year on Ascension Day the Doge sailed on the Bucintoro to the <em>Sposalizio del Mare<\/em> \u2014 the &#8220;Marriage of the Sea&#8221;, in which he cast a golden ring into the Adriatic. The original was destroyed in 1798 under French rule; only fragments and wood carvings survive, also on display in the museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exhibited model is a <strong>scale reconstruction<\/strong> based on historical sources. It reconstructs the decoration, allegories and ceremony \u2014 take your time and you will recognise the sculpture groups, the allegories of the Venetian virtues and the Doges&#8217; coats of arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From black powder to steam<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The transition from the galley to the modern navy: ships of the line, frigates, the last Venetian warships before 1797, the passage to the Austrian and then the Italian navy after 1866. Models, original uniforms, navigational instruments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">International naval history &amp; the Swedish collection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One section shows that the Italian navy did not act in isolation: through gifts, naval agreements and shipyard exchange, Europe&#8217;s sea powers \u2014 Venice, Sweden, England, France \u2014 were closely interlinked from the 18th century. On display are, among other things, models from the Swedish naval tradition and diplomatic gifts to the Italian navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First and Second World War<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Italian naval history in the 20th century, focusing on the <strong>maiali<\/strong> \u2014 the Italian navy&#8217;s manned torpedoes, which severely damaged two British battleships at Alexandria in 1941. A separate section documents the fate of the Italian navy after the armistice of 1943.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gondolas and lagoon boats<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most charming parts of the museum: historic gondolas and lagoon boats, including especially decorated examples and boats with prominent provenance, plus a systematic primer of lagoon boat types \u2014 topo, sandolo, mascareta, bragozzo. If you want to know the difference between a gondola, a sandolo and a topo: here they lie side by side, labelled, with construction sections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Padiglione delle Navi \u2014 the ships pavilion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 5 minutes on foot from the main building lies the <strong>Padiglione delle Navi<\/strong> \u2014 a former Arsenale workshop hall displaying <strong>original boats at full size<\/strong>: rowing boats, tenders, 20th-century warcraft and larger vessels. Unlike the small models in the main building, here you get a <strong>physical sense of scale<\/strong>: how tall a galley really was, how cramped the rowing benches were, how heavy the guns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Padiglione delle Navi normally belongs to the extended visit, but arrangements can differ due to renovation, security, special openings or separate access control. Check before your visit whether the pavilion is currently open and included in your chosen ticket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The submarine Enrico Dandolo<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, MUNAV periodically offers guided visits to the submarine <strong>Enrico Dandolo<\/strong>. These require a separate ticket or time slot and run at fixed departure times \u2014 real added value for families and technology fans. In the summer half-year the museum is usually open 10:00 to 18:00 (last entry 17:00), in winter usually 10:00 to 17:00 (last entry 16:00). The regular closing day changes in 2026 according to Venezia Unica: Tuesday until 11 May, Monday thereafter. The museum is large \u2014 visitors spread out well even in summer.
