The island has been a fishing place since its beginnings: the shallow lagoon around Burano is among the most fish-rich waters of the northern Adriatic, known above all for g\u00f2 (lagoon gobies), sch\u00ece (small lagoon shrimp) and moeche (moulting crabs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>coloured houses<\/strong> are no modern tourism invention \u2014 they are part of a long local tradition. <strong>According to a widespread tradition<\/strong>, the fishermen painted their houses in different, strong colours so they could clearly identify them from the water even in dense lagoon fog and at dusk. This explanation is common but not clearly documented historically \u2014 historians discuss several origins. What is certain is that the colours are strictly regulated by the municipality today: anyone wanting to repaint a house must obtain a permit from the municipal administration, which sets the shade. The houses are repainted regularly because the lagoon salt quickly bleaches the paint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have seen one colourful Burano photo, you already know much of the island \u2014 the main street <strong>Via Baldassarre Galuppi<\/strong>, the <strong>Fondamenta della Pescaria<\/strong> and side lanes such as <strong>Calle Pizzo<\/strong> and <strong>Calle del Pistor<\/strong> are among the most intense photo spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Highlights on Burano<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. A walk through the coloured lanes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Burano is small \u2014 about 0.21 km\u00b2, four small islands connected by bridges. A complete walk takes about 60 minutes. Recommended stations: <strong>from the vaporetto pier<\/strong> along the Fondamenta della Pescaria heading north (the first coloured houses by the water), then <strong>Via Baldassarre Galuppi<\/strong> as the main street with caf\u00e9s and lace shops, on to <strong>Calle Pizzo<\/strong> (one of the most colourful side streets, a frequent photo hotspot), then the <strong>Chiesa San Martino<\/strong> with the leaning bell tower, and finally the <strong>fishing harbour<\/strong> on the east side with boats and, occasionally, fishermen mending nets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. The leaning bell tower of the Chiesa San Martino<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bell tower of the parish church of San Martino is the famous &#8220;Pisa of the lagoon&#8221; \u2014 about 53 metres tall, leaning around 1.8 metres to the west. The tilt arose during construction in the 16th and 17th centuries, when the soft lagoon foundation gave way under the tower&#8217;s weight. The lean has long been considered relatively stable; current structural claims should not be made without an official source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The church itself (15th\/16th c.) is plain inside but holds a <strong>Crucifixion by Giambattista Tiepolo (c. 1725)<\/strong> \u2014 one of the few Tiepolo works outside Venice&#8217;s historic centre, unknown to many travellers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Museo del Merletto (lace museum)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the main square, right next to the church of San Martino: the municipal lace museum in the rooms of the former Scuola dei Merletti, devoted to traditional <strong>Burano needle lace<\/strong>. <strong>Punto in aria<\/strong> and its relative <strong>reticella<\/strong> are <em>sewn<\/em> lace techniques \u2014 made &#8220;in the air&#8221; with needle and thread, not with bobbins. Burano is known above all for needle lace; bobbin lace belongs to other European traditions and should not be confused with Burano needle lace. As early as the 16th century, Burano lace was considered one of the most valuable forms of lace handwork in Europe; 17th- and 18th-century sources mention it as part of court fashion in France, Spain and at the Habsburg court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Collection:<\/strong> historic lace work from the 16th\u201320th centuries, with explanatory panels on the needle technique.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Opening hours:<\/strong> Tuesday to Sunday 10:00\u201316:00, last entry 15:30; closed Mondays. Small pieces can already cost high two- to three-figure sums, larger works much more. Very cheap &#8220;Burano&#8221; lace in the tourist shops is frequently machine-made or imported. For larger purchases, ask for proof of origin, the workshop&#8217;s name, material, method of manufacture and a certificate \u2014 for instance at the museum-affiliated Consorzio Merletti di Burano or one of the few remaining workshops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Casa di Bepi Su\u00e0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of Burano&#8217;s most famous photo houses. Bepi Su\u00e0 (Giuseppe Toselli, 1920\u20132002) was a local fisherman and cinema operator who decorated his house with geometric patterns in different colours \u2014 not &#8220;colourful in the Burano style&#8221; but deliberately arranged squares and stripes in ochre, blue and green. Today a classic Burano photo motif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. The fishing harbour and local restaurants<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the east side of the island lies the traditional fishing harbour \u2014 small boats, locally shaped everyday life. Instead there are a few small, characterful B&amp;Bs and boutique addresses in converted fishermen&#8217;s houses. The advantage: the island without day-trippers in the morning and evening, and local character. Via Murano the journey splits into about 10 min to Murano + 35 min on to Burano. Burano \u2194 Torcello via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.treffpunkt-venedig.de\/en\/vaporetto-venice\/line-9\/\">line 9<\/a> (a short shuttle boat, about 5 min). Connections via Punta Sabbioni or the Lido (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.treffpunkt-venedig.de\/en\/vaporetto-venice\/line-14\/\">line 14<\/a>) may be possible depending on season and timetable, but should be checked with ACTV. If you combine Burano with Murano and\/or Torcello, a vaporetto day pass usually works out cheaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Burano with children and during acqua alta<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>With children:<\/strong> Burano is one of the best islands for families \u2014 small scale, coloured houses, a fishing harbour with boats. Works from preschool age. The Casa di Bepi Su\u00e0 makes a good &#8220;search game&#8221; (which shape can you find?), and the lace demonstration in the Museo del Merletto impresses children too. Visit time with children 1.5\u20132 hours; after that it gets too cramped for most children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Acqua alta on Burano:<\/strong> Burano can also be affected by acqua alta, above all vaporetto piers, fondamente and low paths by the water. The island is often less affected than the particularly low areas around San Marco, but there is no guarantee. During stronger high water, check current tide, ACTV and weather information.
