In a nutshell:<\/strong> Treviso<\/strong> lies 30 km north of Venice in the Veneto and is reached by regional train in 35\u201340 minutes<\/strong> from Venezia Santa Lucia (from \u20ac4.30). The town is known as “Little Venice on the mainland”<\/strong> \u2014 with its own canal old town (the Sile and Cagnan canals), city walls, the medieval Piazza dei Signori and the fish-market island of Pescheria. Treviso is the home of the Prosecco region<\/strong> (Conegliano-Valdobbiadene UNESCO area directly to the north) and is considered the birthplace of tiramis\u00f9<\/strong>. Far more relaxed than Venice \u2014 perfect for a half-day or full-day trip without the crowds.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n

Treviso is one of the best-kept secrets<\/strong> around Venice. The town combines canal atmosphere with Veneto-hinterland cosiness, has first-class food (tiramis\u00f9, Prosecco, local meat and fish cooking) and, despite its proximity to Venice, is far less touristy. For Venice overnight guests it is an almost ideal day trip \u2014 quick to reach, a compact old town, every highlight walkable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recommendation:<\/strong> the Regio from Venezia Santa Lucia, arriving at Treviso Centrale. From there it is a 10-minute walk to the old town. If you come by car: the “Park Stadium” car park on the edge of town (approx. \u20ac8\/day), then a 15-minute walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What to see in Treviso<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Piazza dei Signori & Palazzo dei Trecento<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The town’s main square, framed by the medieval Palazzo dei Trecento<\/strong> (seat of the historic town council of 300 members, hence the name) and the 48 m Torre Civica<\/strong>. An open-air stage in summer, and all year round the Trevisans’ meeting point for an aperitif (the iconic spritz was, incidentally, invented in this region).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pescheria (fish-market island)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A tiny island in the middle of the Cagnan canal \u2014 the town’s fish market site<\/strong> since the 19th century. Atmospherically unique: fishmongers on an island surrounded by water, gulls circling, the river flowing beneath the stalls. Open Tue\u2013Sat 8 am\u20131 pm. Worth a photo stop even outside market hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Calmaggiore \u2014 the main shopping street<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Venetian-style arcades lead from Piazza dei Signori to the cathedral. This is where the historic bookshops, clothing stores and restaurants are. Tip: Antiche Carampane<\/strong> for an authentic Veneto trattoria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cattedrale di San Pietro Apostolo (cathedral)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The neoclassical main church with 7 green domes. Inside: Titian’s altarpiece “Annunciation”<\/strong> (1520, the principal work) and the crypt of Saint Liberalis (the town’s patron). Free entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chiesa di San Nicol\u00f2<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A Gothic Dominican church, one of the largest of its kind in Italy. Famous for the Tomaso da Modena frescoes<\/strong> from the 14th century \u2014 40 portraits of Dominican monks in the chapter house (in the neighbouring Seminario Vescovile, accessed separately). One of the most important Trecento works north of Tuscany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

City walls & Sile promenade<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Treviso has an almost completely preserved Venetian city wall<\/strong> from the 16th century with three monumental gates (Porta San Tomaso, Porta Altinia, Porta Santi Quaranta). Along the Sile river on the southern edge of town runs a lovely promenade \u2014 perfect for a quiet stroll after lunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
