It received its present name around 1377 after a miraculous incident: a sculpture of the Virgin found in a nearby vegetable garden (<em>orto<\/em>) was said to have brought about healings. The statue was moved into the church, and the name &#8220;Madonna dell&#8217;Orto&#8221; \u2014 &#8220;the Madonna in the vegetable garden&#8221; \u2014 took hold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Architecturally the church is a <strong>textbook example of Venetian brick Gothic<\/strong>: a three-aisled basilica with a wooden roof, a vaulted apse, a slender campanile tapering upwards with an onion cupola and \u2014 of particular building-historical interest \u2014 a <strong>fa\u00e7ade with Renaissance statue frames in white Istrian marble<\/strong> on the Gothic brick base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the church mattered so much to Tintoretto<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jacopo Robusti<\/strong>, called Tintoretto (&#8220;the little dyer&#8221;, after his father&#8217;s trade), lived his entire adult life in the Sestiere Cannaregio \u2014 just 200 metres from the Madonna dell&#8217;Orto. His house on the Fondamenta dei Mori survives to this day (house number Cannaregio 3399, marked by a small memorial plaque). The Madonna dell&#8217;Orto was his parish church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike the pictures for the Scuola Grande di San Rocco (a commercial commission) or the pictures in the Doge&#8217;s Palace (a state commission), here he painted <strong>for his own parish, in his own sestiere<\/strong>. How much that meant to him is shown by the fact that after his death in 1594 he was buried here \u2014 not in San Rocco, not in one of the great patrician churches, but in his parish church. In the right aisle, in the Cappella di San Mauro, lie Jacopo, his daughter Marietta (herself a painter, died 1590) and his son Domenico (also a painter).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you&#8217;ll see \u2014 the main works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Adoration of the Golden Calf &amp; Last Judgement (1562\u20131564)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>two monumental wall pictures in the chancel<\/strong>, each 14.5 \u00d7 5.9 metres, have hung on the same wall for over 460 years. By his own offer, Tintoretto painted them practically for free \u2014 only material costs plus minimal payment \u2014 as a <em>gift to his parish<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Adoration of the Golden Calf<\/strong> (left wall): a Moses scene from Exodus 32 \u2014 the people of Israel dance around the golden calf, while Moses above in the clouds receives the tablets of the law. The composition is explicitly theological: <em>human error below \u2014 divine revelation above<\/em>.<\/li><li><strong>Last Judgement<\/strong> (right wall): one of Tintoretto&#8217;s most ambitious pictures \u2014 a complete Last Judgement with hundreds of figures in descending vortex movements. John Ruskin later compared the picture with Michelangelo&#8217;s Sistine ceiling cosmology.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple (1551\u20131556)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the left aisle hangs Tintoretto&#8217;s <strong>&#8220;Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple&#8221;<\/strong>. The small Mary climbs a steep staircase up to the high priest. The <strong>radical worm&#8217;s-eye perspective<\/strong> set the style for 200 years of Renaissance composition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. San Cristoforo (1556) \u2014 high-altar sculpture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the high altar stands a large stone sculpture of St Christopher with the Christ Child on his shoulders. It goes back to the church&#8217;s original patronage (San Cristoforo dei Mori).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Cappella di San Mauro \u2014 Tintoretto&#8217;s tomb<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the right aisle, in the fourth chapel, is <strong>Tintoretto&#8217;s family tomb<\/strong>. A plain marble slab with an inscription marks the burial chamber \u2014 no pyramid mausoleum like Canova&#8217;s in the Frari, no dramatic sculptural tomb. Tintoretto wanted to be buried in the simple form of his parish church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.
