The organiser publishes the binding schedule shortly before the event. Expect the whole afternoon, roughly 3:00 pm to after 7:00 pm, to revolve around the regatta.

What the Regata Storica actually is

The Regata Storica is not folklore staged for visitors. It is the most important date in the calendar of Voga alla Veneta, the Venetian rowing technique in which you row standing up and facing forward. The rowers come from the clubs of the lagoon, many families have fielded competitors for generations, and the winners of the gondolini race are genuine local celebrities. Standing on the bank, you experience less of a show than a city festival in which the crowd is loudly involved.

The Corteo Storico beforehand recalls the arrival of Caterina Cornaro, Queen of Cyprus, in the 15th century: replica ceremonial boats, coats of arms, costumes, drums. The parade is the more rewarding part for photographs, the races for atmosphere — above all the final.

Where to watch

The course runs the full length of the Grand Canal. That sounds like plenty of room, but it is not: the canal has wide public walkways in only a few places. These options work well:

Riva del Vin (San Polo, south of Rialto)

The best known free stretch, with direct access to the water and a view of the Rialto Bridge. It fills up early — for a front-row spot, be there well before 2:30 pm. Bars and toilets are within walking distance.

Ca’ Foscari (Dorsoduro) — the finish

The floating stage known as the machina, where the prizes are awarded, sits in front of Palazzo Ca’ Foscari. The atmosphere is at its most intense here and the gondolini sprint finishes right in front of you — but public space is very limited.

Punta della Dogana and Bacino di San Marco

The best spot for the start of the parade at 3:30 pm and for wide shots with San Giorgio Maggiore behind. You only see the races passing from here — if you want both, move towards Accademia afterwards.

Paid grandstands

Seats are sold on stands and floating platforms along the Grand Canal, and palazzi and hotels offer window and terrace places. Availability, location and prices change every year and should be checked directly with the organiser or provider — last-minute seats are rarely available.

Bridges — with limits

The Rialto, Accademia and Scalzi bridges give you the overview, but they are thoroughfares: standing in the front row only works to a point, and in heavy crowds movement is managed. Usable as a fallback, not as your main plan.

With children

The banks are unfenced and the crowd is dense. The quieter northern stretch between Ca’ d’Oro and the station is more practical, or watch the parade only and leave before the final. See Venice with kids.

Transport on regatta day: what does not run

This is the part most day visitors underestimate: during the parade and the races the Grand Canal closes to scheduled services. Vaporetto lines 1 and 2 do not follow their usual route during that window; ACTV sets up diversions and replacement stops and publishes the details a few days in advance.

Expect long walks. Getting from the station to St Mark’s Square on regatta afternoon is effectively a walk — 40 minutes or more depending on the closures.

The ring lines keep running. Services around the outside of the city are the alternative to the closed Grand Canal. The Regata Storica is traditionally held on the first Sunday in September. The historic parade starts at 3:30 pm and the closing gondolini race at 6:10 pm.

</details>

<details>
Does it cost anything to watch?

No. Watching from the public walkways and bridges along the Grand Canal is free — you only need patience and an early spot. Only seats on grandstands and floating platforms, and window or terrace places in palazzi and hotels, are paid. No city access contribution applies in September 2026.

</details>

<details>
Where is the best free spot?

Riva del Vin, just south of the Rialto Bridge, offers direct access to the water and the best known view — and fills up earliest. For the sprint finish and the prize giving, position yourself in Dorsoduro level with Ca’ Foscari. For the parade and wide photographs, Punta della Dogana at Bacino di San Marco works well.

</details>

<details>
Do the vaporetti run during the Regata Storica?

Not on the Grand Canal. During the parade and the races the canal closes to scheduled services; ACTV sets up diversions and replacement stops and publishes them shortly beforehand. The lines running around the outside of the city normally keep operating. Expect noticeably longer walks that afternoon.

</details>

<details>
How long does the whole event last?

About three and a half to four hours: the parade from 3:30 pm, then four races, finishing after the gondolini race at around 6:45 pm. If you only want to see part of it, choose between the visually striking Corteo Storico at the start and the most exciting race at the end.

</details>

<details>
Can I combine the regatta with the Film Festival?

Yes — the Mostra runs from 2 to 12 September 2026, so regatta Sunday falls inside it. Doing both on the same afternoon does not work, though: the journey from the Lido into the historic centre takes considerably longer that day. A morning screening on the Lido plus the afternoon on the Grand Canal is practical.
