In short: the Teatro La Fenice is Venice’s official opera house and one of the most important in Italy — opened in 1792, burnt down twice (1836 and 1996) and rebuilt faithfully both times on the principle dov’era e com’era, where it was and how it was. Verdi’s La Traviata (1853) and Rigoletto (1851), Rossini’s Tancredi (1813) and Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress (1951) all had their world premieres here. The auditorium holds roughly 1,000 seats across the stalls and five tiers of boxes. The 2026/27 season runs from November 2026 to October 2027: twelve opera productions, five ballet evenings and around twenty symphony concerts. 50 performances are bookable directly here through to May 2027 — the season opens with Giordano’s Fedora from 13 November 2026, followed by Madama Butterfly, Janáček’s Jenůfa and Carmen. Tickets: opera 20–380 €, symphony concert 15–130 €. Address: Campo San Fantin 1965, Sestiere San Marco — a 7-minute walk from St Mark’s Square.

“The phoenix of Venice — twice out of the ashes, rebuilt identically both times. If you want to hear real Italian opera in Venice, this is where you go.”

La Fenice means the phoenix, and the name has been earned. Twice burnt to the ground, twice raised again from the ashes on the same site and in the same style. The last fire, in 1996, was arson: two electricians set it to avoid a contractual penalty for running late, and the entire interior was destroyed. The rebuild followed the principle dov’era e com’era and was completed in 2003. The result is an auditorium that looks exactly as it did in the nineteenth century, with modern stage machinery behind it. If you want real Italian opera in Venice — not a tourist concert with a thinned-out repertoire, but the lagoon city’s own producing repertory house — you go to the Fenice.

What makes the Fenice different

An address for world premieres

Rossini’s Tancredi in 1813, Verdi’s Rigoletto in 1851 and La Traviata in 1853, Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress in 1951 — all heard here for the first time. A piece of Italian music history.

Intimate acoustics

A small hall of about 1,000 seats, with acoustics built around the voice. Singers carry extremely well and quiet writing (Sciarrino, Britten) gains unusual density. Against full Mahler force the room reaches its limits.

A faithful reconstruction

After the 1996 fire the auditorium was rebuilt in full — stucco, gilding, ceiling frescoes. It reopened in 2003, visually identical to the nineteenth-century house.

A repertory theatre

Its own productions, its own orchestra, its own season. Not a tourist format — you sit in performances Venetians also attend, with demanding programming and conductors of standing.

The three lives of the Fenice — a timeline

1792

Opening. The new opera house of the Republic of Venice, built by Gianantonio Selva, replaces the Teatro San Benedetto, which had burnt down in 1773 — hence the name Fenice, phoenix. The opening work was Paisiello’s I Giuochi d’Agrigento.

1813

Rossini’s Tancredi premiere. The beginning of the Fenice’s great bel canto era.

1836

The first fire. The auditorium is destroyed completely. The Meduna brothers rebuild it in a single year; it reopens on 26 December 1837. Where it was, how it was.

1851–53

Verdi twice over. Rigoletto premieres on 11 March 1851, La Traviata on 6 March 1853. Both belong to the core repertoire of every opera house in the world.

1951

Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress. Premiered on 11 September with the composer conducting. The Fenice becomes a bridgehead for international modernism in Italy.

29 Jan 1996

The second fire. Arson by two electricians trying to avoid a penalty for delayed work. The auditorium burns out entirely; only the outer walls remain. The rebuild takes seven years.

14 Dec 2003

Reopening. A gala concert under Riccardo Muti. The hall looks like the hall of 1837 — gilding, stucco and ceiling frescoes all reconstructed from archive records. Com’era, dov’era had won out over a modernist counter-proposal.
