It’s Christmas Time” and is organised by the Comune di Venezia with the company Vela spa. In the old town it includes more than 50 kilometres of Christmas lights, the 15-metre tree in Piazza San Marco, the ice rink in Campo San Polo and the glass chandeliers of “Murano illumina il mondo” under the Procuratie Vecchie. The classic Christmas market with wooden huts is not in the old town but in Mestre. On New Year’s Eve there are fireworks over the Bacino di San Marco at midnight. The official 2026/27 programme had not been published as of 2 November 2026; below you find what ran last year and what is still open.

Christmas in Venice 2026/27: planning status

Christmas and New Year’s Eve in Venice — programme and status

What

Last year 2025/26 (comparison only)

2026/27

Christmas lights

Switched on 21 November 2025; more than 50 km of lights and 26 three-dimensional installations, also on the lagoon islands

Date not yet published

Tree in Piazza San Marco

15 metres high, lit on 22 November 2025 at 6:30 pm

Date open

Murano illumina il mondo

Third edition from 21 November 2025 to 1 March 2026, twelve artist chandeliers under the Procuratie Vecchie

Not known whether there will be another edition

Ice rink Campo San Polo

Rinks in Venice, Mestre and Marghera until 17 February 2026

Dates and prices open

Christmas market (wooden huts)

In Mestre on Piazza Ferretto, not in the old town

See Christmas in Mestre

New Year’s Eve fireworks

Midnight over the Bacino di San Marco in front of the Arsenale

Schedule not yet published

New Year’s Eve party in Mestre

“Random” on Piazza Ferretto from 10 pm, free with compulsory registration

Programme open

An unofficial portal says the programme will be published “between the end of November and the beginning of December”; the city has not confirmed this. We will update this page as soon as the programme appears.

Lights, tree and Murano chandeliers in the old town

Last year the lights were switched on on 21 November, the day of the Festa della Madonna della Salute. The lighting ran through calli, campi and squares, from Strada Nova into the sestieri, and reached the islands of Lido, Pellestrina, Murano, Burano, Sant’Erasmo and Vignole. The tree in Piazza San Marco was lit the day after. Under the Procuratie Vecchie, twelve artist-designed Murano glass chandeliers hung last year; they could be seen at any time in the arcade. The city has not yet said whether “Murano illumina il mondo” will continue in 2026/27.

Ice skating in Venice: Campo San Polo, Mestre and Marghera

The ice rink in Campo San Polo, the second-largest square in the city, is part of the regular winter programme. Last year the rinks in Venice, on Piazza Ferretto in Mestre and on Piazza Mercato in Marghera stayed open until 17 February, the last day of Carnival. Hours ranged from 11 am to 9 pm depending on the day; in Marghera the rink opened from 2:30 pm to 8 pm on weekdays. Gloves were compulsory. The city has not yet given prices, opening hours or the start date for 2026/27.

Christmas market: why Mestre

The city traditionally puts its wooden huts with crafts and specialities on Piazza Ferretto in Mestre, not in the old town. If you are looking for a Christmas market, you travel to the mainland, by train, tram or bus. All details are on the page Christmas in Mestre 2026/27.

New Year’s Eve in Venice: fireworks and alternatives

The official fireworks start at midnight over the Bacino di San Marco, in front of the Arsenale. Venezia Unica explicitly points out that they are not visible from Piazza and Piazzetta San Marco. Good spots are along the Riva degli Schiavoni, Riva Ca’ di Dio, Riva San Biagio and Riva dei Sette Martiri, reached from the Arsenale waterbus stop (Vaporetto). These details come from the 2025/26 edition and may change.

Mestre: Last year Piazza Ferretto hosted the “Random” New Year’s Eve party from 10 pm, free, with compulsory registration.

Teatro La Fenice: The New Year’s concert on 1 January is a fixed date in the calendar, see Teatro La Fenice.

Plan ahead: Sort out hotel and dinner for 31 December early, and check the waterbus timetable for the return after midnight.

Time, location and programme of the 2026/27 fireworks have not yet been published.

Practical notes for winter

Access fee: The access fee applied until 26 July in 2026; as far as we know it does not apply in winter.
