Twelve days full of readings, book presentations, author talks, writing workshops and book-trade markets at several Mestre locations (Piazza Ferretto, Centro Le Barche, the VEZ library). Admission to all open-air events is free; some indoor events require a reservation. The 2026 focus: contemporary Italian literature, with its own programme for young readers (Mestre Bookfest Kids).

Who reads here

Since its first edition in 2022, the Mestre Bookfest has developed into a fixed meeting point of the Italian literary scene. Around 80 authors are invited each year, several of them international guests. The focus is on contemporary Italian literature, but also on translations from the German-speaking world. In 2025 the guests included Roberto Saviano, Stefania Auci and Paolo Giordano — the 2026 line-up is usually announced in mid-May.

Locations in Mestre

Piazza Ferretto — the main stage with large readings, an open-air setting with 800 seats in the evening.

Centro Culturale Candiani — small hall events, workshops, writing labs.

VEZ library — book-forum discussions, readings for library members.

Centro Le Barche — a booksellers’ market with around 40 publishers, programme for children.

Mestre Bookfest Kids — its own children’s programme in the Parco Albanese, with story hours and painting workshops.

Programme and tickets

Open-air readings on Piazza Ferretto: free, no reservation.

Hall events at the Candiani: free, but online reservation required (places limited, sell out quickly).

Workshops and writing labs: €15–30 per session, with a registration deadline.

Booksellers’ market: free to enter all day.

Festival website with programme: mestrebookfest.it

Why Mestre, not Venice?

Mestre — Venice’s mainland sister — is overlooked by many visitors because it is perceived as a “dormitory suburb”. The Mestre Bookfest is proof that the town has its own cultural identity: here you find Italian families, young readers, university students — a clientele barely visible on the island of Venice. If you plan a hotel stay in Mestre (significantly cheaper than the island), you can use the Bookfest perfectly as a “contrast programme” to the tourist city.

Getting to Mestre

From the island of Venice: regional train Santa Lucia → Mestre (10 min., €1.55).
