Festa della Madonna della Salute 2026 in Venice: Date, Votive Bridge & Traditions

von Venedig Magazin Tourismus News

While Venice’s summer festivals overflow with tourists, the Festa della Madonna della Salute on 21 November is a quiet, deeply Venetian event. It is not a spectacle for visitors but a thanksgiving and pilgrimage of the locals β€” and precisely for that reason one of the most authentic days you can experience in the lagoon city. If you are in Venice in November, join the stream of pilgrims, walk across the floating bridge to the Salute church and light a candle.

What is the Festa della Madonna della Salute?

The Festa della Salute goes back to one of the worst crises in the city’s history: the plague epidemic of 1630/31, which killed around a third of the population. In October 1630 the Venetian Senate vowed to dedicate a magnificent church to the Madonna if the city were freed from the disease. When the plague subsided, Venice kept its promise and had Baldassare Longhena build the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute β€” “Salute” meaning both health and salvation. Ever since, the city gives thanks every year on 21 November with a pilgrimage to the church.

The exact opening times of the votive bridge are announced each year shortly beforehand by the City of Venice; as a rule the bridge is walkable for several days around the feast day (last year, for example, from Wednesday to Sunday). The central moment is the solemn Mass that the Patriarch celebrates in the Salute on 21 November.

The votive bridge across the Grand Canal

The most visible symbol of the festival is the votive pontoon bridge: specially for the celebrations, a roughly 80-metre bridge resting on floating pontoons is built across the Grand Canal β€” from the Santa Maria del Giglio landing on the St Mark’s side over to San Gregorio right next to the Salute. Across this bridge the faithful move in an unbroken stream, many with a candle in hand. In the evening the bridge is illuminated β€” an atmospheric sight in November Venice.

The Salute β€” a building born of gratitude

The Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute at the tip of Dorsoduro, where the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal meet, is one of Venice’s most famous landmarks. Baldassare Longhena designed it as an octagonal baroque building with a mighty dome β€” a deliberately monumental ex-voto, a promise of thanks turned to stone. Inside hang works by Titian and Tintoretto. More on the city’s great sacred buildings is on our Santa Maria della Salute page.

Castradina and other traditions

The Festa della Salute has its own festive dish: the castradina, a hearty stew of smoked and salt-cured mutton with savoy cabbage and onions. The custom dates back to the plague years, when the Dalmatians kept supplying the besieged city with cured meat. Around the Salute and along the route, the lanes are also lined with stalls selling sweets, candles and toys β€” for many Venetian families the day is a fixed date out with the children.
