Venice Day Trips 2026: Routes, Costs and the Best Departure Points

Two directions — two ways to plan

Day trips around Venice fall into two clearly different types of journey. If you are on holiday in an Adriatic beach resort or in Istria/Slovenia and want to visit Venice for a day, you plan very differently from a Venice overnight guest taking a culture day trip out of the lagoon. Choose the direction that fits your situation:

Direction 1

→ TO Venice

You are on an Adriatic holiday (Italy, Croatia or Slovenia) and want to visit Venice for one day. Several Italian departure points plus Istrian ports by seasonal catamaran plus Piran (Slovenia) via boat + bus.

Direction 2

→ FROM Venice

You are staying in Venice and want to spend a day elsewhere — Verona, Padua, Treviso, Vicenza, Portogruaro, Udine, Ferrara, Trieste, the Burchiello boat tour or the lagoon islands Murano/Burano/Torcello.

→ TO Venice — day visitors from the Adriatic region

If you are on holiday in Jesolo, Cavallino, Caorle, Bibione, Lignano, Grado, Chioggia or Punta Sabbioni — or holidaying in Istria (Croatia) or in Piran/Portorož (Slovenia) — you can visit Venice for a day. Each departure point has its own travel logic (vaporetto, fast boat, ATVO bus, train or catamaran); journey times and piers can vary seasonally and should be checked before you travel. The cards below lead to the detailed guides. Note: short-notice pier changes are possible at the Punta Sabbioni terminal — check current ACTV/terminal notices.

From Croatia & Slovenia — seasonal connections (April to October)

Several ports in Istria (Croatia) are connected to Venice by fast catamaran during the season — the arrival pier is the San Basilio terminal in Dorsoduro. From Piran (Slovenia) there are packages with a bus shuttle to the Adriatic port plus the boat. Seasonal catamaran crossings depend heavily on timetables and weather; normally there are no additional border formalities (Croatia and Slovenia are in the Schengen area). Check ports, operators, bus shuttles, prices and return times with the operator each year:

Croatia · northern Istria

Umag

approx. 2:30 h by catamaran — the closest Istrian port, season April–October

Croatia · central Istria

Poreč

approx. 2:45 h by catamaran — a popular Istrian starting point for a Venice day

Croatia · central Istria

Rovinj

Croatia · southern Istria

Pula

approx. 3:45 h full-day catamaran — southernmost port, longest crossing, a long day

Slovenia · boat + bus

Piran

Complete package — bus shuttle (also from Portorož) to the port + catamaran + evening return; check conditions

→ FROM Venice — day trips out of the lagoon

If you are staying in Venice, you have rail connections into the Veneto hinterland and beyond: Padua, Treviso, Vicenza, Portogruaro, Verona, and further afield Ferrara, Udine and Trieste — all feasible as day trips. Plus the Burchiello boat tour along the Brenta canal and the lagoon islands Murano, Burano and Torcello as a “day on the water”. Journey times and prices are guideline values: regional trains are usually stable in price, while Frecciarossa/Italo fares depend more on demand and booking lead time. Check current prices with Trenitalia/Italo.

Full-day cruise; full-day prices currently range from the upper double digits to low triple digits (officially around €147 regular at present). Frequently asked questions about day trips

Is a day trip to Venice worth it at all?

Yes, with a clear route plan. With less than 4–5 hours on site it usually feels very rushed; 6–8 hours make far more sense. In that time you can comfortably combine the St Mark’s Square complex (basilica, Doge’s Palace, campanile) with lunch and a visit to the Rialto Bridge.

How much does a day trip to Venice cost?

Total costs vary widely by departure point, tickets, admissions, food and transport. A simple day trip with boat/bus, vaporetto and a few admissions can come to a low three-digit sum for two people; with the Doge’s Palace, the St Mark’s add-on areas, the campanile and meals it is considerably more. On fee days, the access fee (€5/€10 per person) is added.

Do I have to pay the access fee as a day visitor in 2026?

Only on the 60 fee days between 3 April and 26 July 2026, 8:30 am–4 pm each day. Price: €5 if paid up to and including the fourth-to-last day before the visit; €10 thereafter. Overnight guests in the municipality of Venice do not pay (proof required), nor do children under 14. If you only visit the smaller lagoon islands, you do not pay. → Calendar and booking

How does the day trip from Croatia work?

During the season (roughly April to October), seasonal catamarans sail from Istrian ports (including Poreč, Rovinj, Umag and Pula) to Venice; the arrival pier is the San Basilio terminal in Dorsoduro. Journey times, operators, prices and return crossings are seasonal and should be checked directly with the operator. Detailed guides: Umag, Poreč, Rovinj, Pula — or the complete guide.

Is it possible from Slovenia too?

Yes, from Piran: a package with a bus shuttle (also from Portorož) to the Adriatic port, the catamaran crossing to Venice, free time and an evening return. Season- and weather-dependent; check dates and conditions with the operator. → Detailed guide Piran → Venice

Which culture day trips from Venice are worth it?

In the Veneto hinterland by train: Padua (Scrovegni Chapel), Treviso (canal old town), Vicenza (Palladio, UNESCO), Verona (Arena) and quiet Portogruaro. Further afield as full-day trips: Ferrara, Udine and Trieste. For something special: the Burchiello boat tour.

Do I need to book St Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace in advance?

In high season, booking ahead makes a lot of sense. For St Mark’s Basilica, check the current ticket and time-slot system; the basilica, Pala d’Oro, museum/loggia and campanile have separate or combined tickets. The Doge’s Palace is normally covered by the St Mark’s Square museums ticket (€35, online from €30 with ≥30 days’ lead time) or a pass; check current prices and time slots officially in advance. Which pass pays off: Venice passes compared.

What happens if there is acqua alta during my day trip?

During acqua alta, particularly low-lying areas around San Marco can be affected; raised wooden walkways are set out as needed. The MOSE barrier has reduced many severe flooding events since 2020, but it does not replace checking current water levels, weather and ACTV notices. Check the forecast before your travel day: → Acqua alta live levels
