Chioggia 2026: Little Venice, Sottomarina Beach and the Fish Market
Chioggia is a hybrid: a lagoon town with canals, bridges and Venetian architecture (“Little Venice”), and at the same time home to the 10 km Sottomarina beach with its fine dark sand. If you want Venice atmosphere and an Adriatic beach from a single base, come to Chioggia — and combine it with the Adriatic’s biggest fish market, lagoon tours and a direct vaporetto link to Venice.
What sets Chioggia apart from the other Adriatic beaches
A dual character. Unlike Jesolo, Bibione, Lignano or Grado, Chioggia is not primarily a beach resort but a lagoon town with its own beach. The old town with the Corso del Popolo, the Vigo column, the Ponte Vigo and the Pescheria is intact and is considered an architectural mirror of Venice on a smaller scale. Sottomarina is a separate peninsula, linked to the old town by the Ponte Translaguna.
The Adriatic’s biggest fish market. The Mercato Ittico on the Canal Vena is a daily port of call (except Sundays and Mondays) for restaurants from Venice, Padua and Verona. Retail sales from around 11 am. If you holiday in Chioggia, shop here at least once or eat in the trattoria quarter opposite.
A direct vaporetto link to Venice. Via ACTV Line 11 + the Pellestrina ferry you reach San Marco in around 1:30 h — without a car. Alternative: the Line 80 bus via Mestre to Piazzale Roma in approx. 50 min. That makes Chioggia, alongside Cavallino-Treporti, the second beach town with a public-transport link to Venice.
Sottomarina beach. 10 km of fine dark quartz sand, very gently shelving, on average 200 m wide — the widest sandy beach on the northern Adriatic. The dark sand warms up quickly and is traditionally used for “sand therapy” (sand baths). Bandiera Blu 2026.
Getting there from Austria and Germany
Via the Brenner A22 or Tauern A23 → A4 Venezia. Exit Padova-Sud or Mira-Oriago, then the SS309 Romea (15 km) or SR516 (25 km). From Vienna around 7 h, from Munich around 6 h, from Klagenfurt around 4 h. Rovigo station with bus shuttle, or direct to Venice Mestre + bus line 80. From Marco Polo airport: 50 min by car, approx. 1:30 h by public transport via Mestre.

Frequently asked questions about Chioggia
Old town or Sottomarina — where to stay?
The old town for culture travellers who want to dine in the trattorias in the evening and shop at the fish market in the morning. Sottomarina for families and anyone wanting direct beach access. The two are 10 minutes apart on foot via the Ponte Translaguna — you lose nothing either way.
Is Chioggia affected by acqua alta?
Yes. Chioggia lies in the southern part of the lagoon and, like Venice, is regularly affected by acqua alta. The raised walkways (“passerelle”) are set up when forecasts exceed 110 cm. The MOSE barrier has been actively deployed since 2020 for peaks above 130 cm. Current forecast on the weather page.
What is the “Palio della Marciliana”?
Chioggia’s most important historical festival, always on the third weekend in June. A boat race between the town’s four sestieri in traditional marciliana boats, plus medieval parades, an archery competition and town spectacle. Details on the events page.
How do you get from Chioggia to Venice without a car?
Three options: (1) ACTV bus line 80 → Piazzale Roma approx. 50 min; (2) vaporetto Line 11 with the Pellestrina ferry and connection via the Lido to San Marco — scenic, approx. 1:30 h; (3) train from Rovigo to Venice Santa Lucia — longer but comfortable. Vaporetto tickets from ACTV machines or the AVM Venezia Official app.
