Markets in Venice & the Lagoon: Rialto, Weekly Markets & Market Days 2026

Markets show Venice at its most everyday: this is where Venetians buy their fish from the lagoon and the Adriatic, their vegetables from the garden island of Sant’Erasmo and the mainland. This page shows you which market runs on which day — sestiere by sestiere in the old town, plus the Lido, the islands, Chioggia and the mainland. The times are practical guide values: market days, individual stalls, public holidays, weather and roadworks can all cause changes. A quick up-to-date check pays off, above all for the weekly and special markets.

Mercato di Rialto — the heart of the city

Since the Middle Ages, the Rialto in the sestiere of San Polo has been Venice’s central market and trading quarter. Today the market consists of two areas:

  • Erberia — the fruit and vegetable market, generally Monday to Saturday mornings, roughly 7:00 to 13:00/13:30. In season you will find artichokes (castraure) and asparagus from Sant’Erasmo and other lagoon and mainland farms here.
  • Pescheria — the fish market under the neo-Gothic loggias on the Campo della Pescaria, generally Tuesday to Saturday mornings. Closed Mondays and Sundays. Come early: the choice is largest in the morning, and some stalls start packing up later on.

Tip: come before 9 am — then you experience the market as the Venetians’ workplace, not as a photo backdrop. The stallholders select and pack the fish; please don’t reach into the display yourself.

Neighbourhood markets — where the Venetians shop

Away from the Rialto, small rione markets supply the residential quarters. They are unspectacular but authentic:

  • Via Garibaldi (Castello) — generally Monday to Saturday, roughly 7:00–14:00. Fruit, vegetables and fish in one of the least touristy quarters; partly from a market boat.
  • Rio Terà San Leonardo (Cannaregio) — Monday to Saturday mornings, or per local stall hours, on the Strada Nova near the Ponte delle Guglie. Mainly fruit and vegetables, with other food stalls depending on the day.

Lagoon & islands

  • Lido di Venezia — weekly market Tuesdays, 7:00–13:00 on the Riviera di Corinto: food, clothing, household goods. Plus a Friday farmers’ market (Mercato del Contadino) — check locally whether it is running.
  • Burano — the fishing island has a local market area; official sources list the Mercato di Burano on the Campo Pescheria. Check market day, hours and range locally.
  • Chioggia — the “zioba” (Thursday) is one of the best-known and largest weekly markets in the Veneto, Thursdays until 2 pm along the Corso del Popolo. Plus the fish market at the Pescheria by the Canal Vena (check hours locally). → Day trip to Chioggia.
  • Sant’Erasmo — the “garden island” has no tourist market; its vegetables go straight to the Rialto.

Mainland: Mestre & Marghera

  • Mestre — large weekly market on the Via Parco Ponci, Wednesdays and Fridays (Wednesday officially documented). Mestre also has smaller weekday market areas (e.g. Via Fapanni), not to be confused with the big weekly market.
  • Marghera — weekly market on the Piazza Mercato, Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Staying on the mainland? Mestre’s old town is a few minutes away by tram or train.

Antiques: the mercatino on the Campo San Maurizio

Several times a year the Campo San Maurizio (sestiere San Marco, near La Fenice) turns into an atmospheric antiques and bric-a-brac market — on several weekends, Friday to Sunday, typically 9:00–19:00. On sale: silver, jewellery, old prints, Murano glass and curiosities. For 2026, some dates are already published, including 27–29 March and 5–7 June 2026; further weekends usually follow in late summer and before Christmas. Always check the current calendar before visiting.

Practical tips

  • Come early: the food markets live in the morning; from midday many stalls pack up.
  • Cash: many small stalls prefer cash — don’t assume card payment everywhere.
  • Getting there: Rialto market = vaporetto stop Rialto Mercato or Rialto. Find the connection from your stop in the vaporetto journey planner.
  • Fish-market etiquette: leave the selecting to the stallholders; photograph with restraint — no close-ups of people or produce without a brief friendly gesture.

Frequently asked questions about Venice’s markets

On which days is the Rialto fish market open?

The Pescheria (fish market) is generally open Tuesday to Saturday mornings, closed Mondays and Sundays. The fruit and vegetable market (Erberia) runs Monday to Saturday mornings. The choice is largest early in the morning; some stalls pack up later on.

Which day is market day in Chioggia?

Chioggia’s big weekly market is on Thursdays (“El zioba”) until about 2 pm along the Corso del Popolo. There is also a fish market at the Pescheria by the Canal Vena — best check days and hours locally.

Are there markets in Venice on Sundays?

Most food markets (Rialto, the neighbourhood markets) are closed on Sundays. On certain Sundays the antiques market on the Campo San Maurizio may take place — its dates vary and should be checked ahead.

Is a market visit worth it without a kitchen at the hotel?

Yes. The Rialto market and the neighbourhood markets are above all an experience — atmosphere, scents, the produce of the lagoon. Many stalls also sell small things to eat on the spot, and numerous bacari for cicchetti surround the Rialto.

What is the best way to the Rialto market?

By vaporetto to the Rialto Mercato stop (right at the market) or Rialto. Find the right connection from your starting stop in our journey planner.
