Webcam Dorsoduro Venice: Live View from the Hotel American Dinesen

Lade Pegel…

What do I see in the live picture?

The camera looks from an upper floor of the Hotel American Dinesen onto a narrow Venetian side canal in Dorsoduro. You see typical lagoon wooden boats, cargo barges with building materials or food, the occasional gondola with tourists and pedestrians crossing the small bridges. In the background stands the typical architecture of the district: stucco façades in ochre, pink and earth tones, small lanes and quiet courtyard gardens.

Unlike the Grand Canal streams the pace here is slower and the picture more detailed: you see everyday Venetian life rather than tourist traffic. It is especially atmospheric at sunset and dusk.

Where is the camera?

The Hotel American Dinesen stands on the Rio di San Vio, a quiet side canal in Dorsoduro, close to the Gallerie dell’Accademia and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. The Accademia Bridge (the crossing to the San Marco district) and the Salute basilica are both a short walk away.

What makes Dorsoduro special

Dorsoduro is Venice’s university and art district — south of the Grand Canal, with little mass tourism and a lively mix of students, artists and local families. The key addresses:

  • Gallerie dell’Accademia — the main museum of Venetian painting (Bellini, Titian, Veronese, Tintoretto, Tiepolo)
  • Peggy Guggenheim Collection — 20th-century modern art (Picasso, Pollock, Magritte, Kandinsky)
  • Punta della Dogana — contemporary art of the Pinault Collection, at the tip where the Grand Canal meets the Giudecca Canal
  • Santa Maria della Salute — the Baroque plague-thanksgiving church, a landmark at the entrance to the Grand Canal
  • Ca’ Rezzonico — museum of 18th-century Venice
  • Squero di San Trovaso — one of the last historic gondola boatyards
  • Zattere — the southern waterfront promenade with lagoon views and a classic gelato stop
  • Campo Santa Margherita — the student square with bars and an evening aperitivo scene

Photo spots in the district

  • Ponte dell’Accademia — the wooden bridge over the Grand Canal with a view towards the Salute
  • Zattere at sunset — the promenade facing the Giudecca
  • Squero di San Trovaso — the historic gondola yard with its wooden chalet-style buildings
  • Punta della Dogana — the tip of the district, with views of St Mark’s, San Giorgio and the Salute

Frequently asked questions

What does “Dorsoduro” mean?

Literally “hard back” — the district lies on one of the higher, firmer parts of the lagoon islands, which is why it is generally less exposed to acqua alta than St Mark’s. Historically the boatyards (squeri) were also here.

Is Dorsoduro a good place to stay?

Yes. It is quieter than San Marco, with fewer day trippers and a lively mix of students and artists. Vaporetto line 1 and line 2 serve the nearby Accademia and Salute stops.

Which vaporetto stops are near the hotel?

From the Hotel American Dinesen the Accademia, Salute and Zattere areas are all within a short walk; check a map for exact distances.

Will I see gondolas on the stream?

From time to time, mostly around late morning and afternoon. The picture shows a narrow side canal, so traffic is light and varied.

What is the Peggy Guggenheim Collection?

One of Italy’s most important museums of modern art, in the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni on the Grand Canal. The collection was assembled by Peggy Guggenheim, the niece of Solomon R. Guggenheim, and centres on Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism and Italian modernism.

Can I see acqua alta on the webcam?

Indirectly. If the water rises above the stone edge of the quay along the side canal, the picture shows it. The exact level at which that happens varies, so use the official forecast as the primary source. → Acqua alta live level
