Portogruaro: Weekly Market, Antiques Market and Old Town
Portogruaro is not on the beach, but for beach holidaymakers on the northern Adriatic it is the most important hinterland town. About 25 km north-west of Bibione, 30 km from Caorle and 40 km from Lignano, Portogruaro is a stop for two classic market routines: the big Thursday weekly market and the Mercatino dell’Antiquariato on the 2nd Saturday of the month. Plus a well-preserved medieval old town with the Lemene canal and mills.

What makes Portogruaro worth seeing
Portogruaro has one of the best-preserved medieval old towns in the eastern Veneto. The Lemene river runs through the centre as a calming canal, lined with old mills with water wheels, the pink-red 13th-century Palazzo Comunale and arcaded lanes. The main axis, Corso Martiri della Libertà, with its arcades (portici), links the central squares. A one-to-two-hour town visit fits perfectly with a market visit.
Getting there from the Adriatic beach resorts
| From | Distance | By car | Public transport |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bibione | 25 km | 30 min | ATVO bus hourly, 45 min |
| Caorle | 30 km | 35 min | ATVO bus, 50 min |
| Lignano | 40 km | 40 min | Car recommended |
| Jesolo | 50 km | 45 min | via San Donà + train 1:30 h |
Portogruaro has a station on the Venice–Trieste line — the town can be reached by regional express from Venice Mestre in 35 minutes. If you come from Lignano or Bibione, it is best to drive and park at the Parcheggio Stazione or the Parcheggio Villa Comunale (both close to the centre, €1–1.50/h).
When is Portogruaro worth it?
Worth it for …
- A Thursday day trip during a camping holiday in Bibione or Caorle
- Fans of the Mercatino Antiquariato on the 2nd Saturday of the month
- A rainy day that should combine culture and shopping
- A short stroll with old-town character between two beach days
Less useful if …
- you want to stay strictly at the beach
- you expect big-city sightseeing (Portogruaro is small)
- you plan a Sunday day trip (markets rest, shops closed)
