No. Operas are sung in Italian, and a short synopsis is normally provided so you can follow the plot. Because the singers perform within a few metres of you, the story is easy to read from acting and staging alone.

Very. The performance takes place in the palace’s salons without a raised stage, on the same level as the audience. Front rows are only a couple of metres from the singers; the back rows are still close compared with any opera house.

Smart casual. No jacket or tie is required, but you are in the historic rooms of a Grand Canal palace, so jeans and a T-shirt feel out of place. A jacket or a smarter blouse or trousers fits better.
