Mirror Trick San Donà di Piave: Police Stop the €400 Scam in Italy

von mike Unkategorisiert

In a nutshell: The “mirror trick” (Italian: specchietto) around San Donà di Piave became a serious issue in 2025, affecting both locals and holidaymakers in the region. In this scam, the perpetrators fake a collision with, or a scratch on, your wing mirror and then immediately demand cash — almost always around €400, a sum that seems plausible for a repair but that a victim could also quickly pay. That is precisely the danger: the con is designed to pressure drivers in uncertain situations — often retirees or tourists unfamiliar with the language and customs.

How the trick works — step by step

  • Choosing the victim: the perpetrators watch for hire cars with foreign number plates, or drivers who look elderly. Often at motorway service areas, petrol stations or supermarket car parks.
  • Staged damage: while you are driving, the perpetrators throw something at your wing mirror (a stone, a coin, often from a moving car). Or they run a hand along the mirror and claim you damaged their car.
  • The demand: you are forced to stop (honking, flashing lights, an overtaking manoeuvre). The perpetrator points to an already-damaged mirror on their car and demands €300–500 in cash — “otherwise the police and a lot of paperwork”.
  • An added danger: while you argue, a second perpetrator steals from your car (a bag, a wallet, a phone).

The police successes in 2025

A particularly striking case was that of a 70-year-old woman from Treviso who reacted bravely, refused the cash and called the Carabinieri. The perpetrators were caught by the San Donà police in the summer of 2025. Several further arrests followed — the Carabinieri analysed dashcam footage and were able to identify an international network. By the end of 2025, 47 reports had been registered in the Province of Venice, with 11 arrests.

What you should do — the 5 most important rules

  1. Don’t get out if it feels unsafe. Keep the windows closed and the doors locked.
  2. Call 112 immediately — even if the perpetrator pressures you. The police arrive faster than you think.
  3. Never pay cash. If there is genuine damage, it is always settled through insurance — never paid immediately in cash to strangers.
  4. Take a photo of the other vehicle + number plate before you do anything. That is evidence.
  5. Turn on the dashcam — if you have one. In 2025 the footage made several arrests possible.

2026 update — new variants

The Venice police report two new variants that have appeared more frequently since early 2026:

  • The “flat tyre” trick: the perpetrator points to a supposedly flat tyre on your car. As you get out, things are stolen from the car.
  • The “offer of help” trick: at the petrol pump, a “friendly Italian” offers help and distracts you — an accomplice steals from the open fuel area.

In both cases the rule is: call the police, don’t get out, and leave no valuables in view.
