Vaporetto Line 6 Venice: Direct from Piazzale Roma to the Lido in 25 Minutes
In brief: Vaporetto line 6 is the fastest direct connection between Piazzale Roma and the Lido — it bypasses the Grand Canal entirely and takes the southern channel along Zattere/Giudecca. Journey time about 25 minutes versus 60 minutes on line 1. Ideal for Lido day visitors heading straight from the station or car park to the beach — a real time-saver, especially in high season.

Why line 6 instead of line 1 to the Lido?
Line 1 would be the classic way — from the station along the entire Grand Canal, past St Mark’s Square, to the Lido. Romantic, but 60 minutes long. Line 6 takes a completely different route: from Piazzale Roma straight south, past Tronchetto, through the Canale della Giudecca, then east around the main island to the Lido. No touristically interesting stops on the way — but 35 minutes faster.
If the Lido is your destination for the day (beach, film festival, a bike tour across the island), line 6 saves you two precious hours over a round trip on line 1. If you are after the Grand Canal views instead, return with line 1 in the evening after your Lido day.
The route in detail
Line 6 calls at few but functionally useful stops along the southern edge of the island: Piazzale Roma → Santa Marta → San Basilio → Zattere → Giardini → Sant’Elena → Lido. The Santa Marta and San Basilio stops (western Dorsoduro) are less touristy but convenient for stays in the student and university quarter. Zattere is the famous sunny promenade opposite the Giudecca — plenty of bars and gelaterie.
When does line 6 pay off?
- Lido day trip: arrive at the station → quickly to the beach → a relaxed return in the evening.
- With luggage to a Lido hotel: If you are staying on the Lido, line 6 takes you to the hotel quarter without changing.
- Avoiding the crowds: When line 1 is yet again packed between Ferrovia and San Marco (typically 11:00–13:00), line 6 is the relaxed alternative.
- Dorsoduro university / Zattere: For stays in southern Dorsoduro, line 6 is the direct link.
Timetable and frequency
Line 6 runs every 20 minutes during the day. More often at peak times (15 min), less often in the evening (30 min). First departure around 6:30 in the morning, last around 22:00.
