Vaporetto Line N Venice: Night Line on the Grand Canal & Giudecca — Route, Times, Tickets

In brief: Line N (Notturno) is Venice’s central night vaporetto line. It takes over at night when the daytime lines line 1 and line 2 stop running, connecting the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal in a loop: San Zaccaria — Giudecca — Tronchetto — Piazzale Roma — Ferrovia — Rialto — San Marco — Lido. It runs roughly from 23:30 into the early hours (until around 04:30–05:00), about every 30 minutes. The regular ACTV fare applies (single ride €9.50, included in the 24-hour pass).

When does line N run?

Line N picks up where the daytime lines leave off: line 1 has its last departure around 23:41, after which line N is the continuous Grand Canal connection until services resume in the early morning. It runs roughly from 23:30 until around 04:30–05:00, about every 30 minutes — exact departure times shift slightly by season and direction. The notices at the piers and the official AVM/Venezia Unica app are authoritative.

Route and key stops

Unlike the pure Grand Canal line 1, line N runs a ring loop across both of the city’s great waterways — the Giudecca Canal in the south and the Grand Canal in the north. That means practically all the central piers are served at night too.

Line N — the key stops
StopSignificance at night
San Marco-San ZaccariaEastern St Mark’s, Riva degli Schiavoni — the main hub and frequent starting point of the night loop
Giudecca / Zitelle / RedentoreServes the island of Giudecca and the hotels on the Giudecca Canal — at night reachable only via line N
TronchettoCar-park island and car terminal at the entrance to the city
Piazzale RomaBus terminal and mainland connection — important for late/early arrivals
Ferrovia (Santa Lucia)Main station — connections to night and early trains
RialtoMiddle of the Grand Canal, central interchange and orientation point
San Marco-VallaressoWestern St Mark’s
Lido S.M.E.Lido endpoint of the loop

Because line N runs a loop, it pays to check the direction of travel at the pier before boarding: depending on whether you board clockwise or anticlockwise, you reach your destination faster. If in doubt, ask the pier staff or check the direction in the AVM app.

Tickets

The normal ACTV vaporetto fare applies to line N — a valid day ticket or multi-day pass also covers the night trips:

  • Single ride: €9.50 (valid 75 min, incl. changing)
  • 24-hour pass: €25 — remains valid at night as long as it has not expired
  • 48-/72-hour pass: €35 / €45

Important: the validation requirement at the yellow Imob readers also applies at night. If you are out late, buy your ticket in advance via the app or at the machine — not every counter is staffed at night.

Other night lines in the lagoon

Line N covers the city centre and the Lido. The northern islands have their own night services:

  • Line NMU — night line to Murano (from Fondamente Nove)
  • Line NLN — night connection towards the northern lagoon / Burano (limited frequency)

For Burano and Torcello the night service is far thinner than by day — if you are on the islands in the evening, plan your return early.

Frequently asked questions about night line N

When does the last line 1 run, and from when does line N take over?

Line 1 has its last departure around 23:41. Line N runs from roughly 23:30 into the early hours (around 04:30–05:00), bridging the night on the Grand Canal.

Do I need an extra ticket for line N?

No. The regular ACTV fare applies. A valid single ticket (€9.50) or a running 24-/48-/72-hour pass also covers the night trips.

Does line N stop at St Mark’s Square?

Yes — at San Marco-San Zaccaria (eastern St Mark’s) and San Marco-Vallaresso (western St Mark’s). San Zaccaria is one of the main hubs of the night loop.

Can I reach the station or Piazzale Roma at night?

Yes. Line N serves Ferrovia (Santa Lucia main station), Piazzale Roma (bus terminal) and Tronchetto — important for late arrivals and early departures.

Does line N go to Murano or Burano?

No — that is what the separate night lines NMU (Murano) and NLN (northern lagoon) are for. The night service to the islands is much thinner — plan your return early.
