Golden Hour Chioggia — Sunset Boat Tour in the Southern Lagoon

In brief: A boat tour from Chioggia into the southern Venetian lagoon at the golden hour — past the island of Pellestrina, through the quiet arms of the southern lagoon, with the sun setting over the water. A calmer alternative to the Venice sunset tours — less touristy, with an atmosphere of its own. Duration approx. 2 hours, ideal for Sottomarina/Chioggia holidaymakers after a local evening experience.

“The southern lagoon in golden light — Venice’s quiet cousin in the evening.”

Most sunset tours in the Venetian lagoon depart from Venice itself or from Punta Sabbioni in the north. This one departs from Chioggia — at the southern end of the lagoon, in so-called “Little Venice” — and heads out into the calm southern lagoon, past the long island of Pellestrina and through the smaller lagoon arms behind the Murazzi sea walls. The atmosphere is markedly quieter than Venice itself — fewer tourist boats, more local lagoon feeling.

What the tour shows

Pellestrina island

The long barrier island between lagoon and Adriatic — colourful fishermen’s houses, traditional boats, especially photogenic in golden light.

The Murazzi sea walls

Historic 18th-century stone defences — Venice’s bulwark against the Adriatic, fascinating in cultural-history terms.

Quiet lagoon arms

Away from the main shipping channels — almost untouched lagoon structures rich in birdlife (herons, gulls, cormorants).

The Chioggia skyline

On the way back: the city front of Chioggia with the campanile of Sant’Andrea and the historic fish-market island in evening light.

Why from Chioggia, not Venice?

  • Fewer tourist boats: the southern lagoon is far quieter than the Bacino di San Marco — less competition with other sunset tours.
  • A different landscape: the fishing island of Pellestrina, traditional lagoon architecture, sea walls instead of the St Mark’s skyline.
  • Ideal for Chioggia/Sottomarina holidaymakers: no trip to Venice required — departure right from your resort.
  • Locally authentic: boats often run by local skippers, less mass-market than the Venice tours.

Frequently asked questions

Is the tour worth it if I stay in Venice?

With reservations — getting from Venice to Chioggia is not trivial (ATVO bus 80, 50 min, or vaporetto line 11 with changes, 75 min). Already planning Chioggia as a day trip? Then it combines well: a day in Chioggia → the golden hour tour in the evening → late return to Venice. Otherwise rather the panorama tour from Punta Sabbioni or the jazz cruise straight from Venice.

When does the tour run?

Seasonally April to October, several times a week depending on the operator. Check exact days and the sunset-specific departure time when booking. In high summer (July/August) the tour starts around 7:30 pm, in spring/autumn correspondingly earlier (5:30–6:30 pm).

How does this differ from a regular vaporetto trip?

This is a guided experience tour with lagoon storytelling, a slow pace and deliberate sunset timing. A regular vaporetto passes through quickly — this tour deliberately circles in the loveliest lagoon spots and lingers there.

Can I combine the tour with a day in Chioggia?

Yes — ideally so: the Chioggia old town + fish market + Sottomarina beach in the morning, lunch in a local trattoria, then the boat tour at golden hour. A complete day programme without Venice logistics. Arriving by boat transfer from Venice? See the Chioggia boat transfer page.

Is the tour family-friendly?

Yes, from about age 6 — the calm lagoon is far less seasickness-prone than the open Adriatic. Children under 6 often find 2 hours on the water dull. Bring snacks and water.
