Bibione to Venice Day Trip 2026: Bus, Car, Train — Routes and Programme
In a nutshell: Three routes lead from Bibione to Venice: (1) car via the A4 (Latisana exit, plus park & ride at Mestre/Marghera, Fusina or Tronchetto), (2) the ATVO bus towards Venice/Piazzale Roma or (3) bus + train via Latisana or Portogruaro. Journey times and prices are guide values and should be checked with ATVO/Trenitalia. Important: Bibione is considerably further from Venice than Jesolo or Caorle — a day trip is doable, but works best with an early start. Staying overnight in Bibione does not automatically exempt you from the Venice access fee, because Bibione belongs to the municipality of San Michele al Tagliamento. If Venice is your main destination, consider staying in Venice, Mestre or on the Lido instead.

Option 1: Car via the A4 + park & ride
With your own car, drive from Bibione via the SS14 towards Latisana, then take the A4 Venice–Trieste heading west. Without traffic the journey usually takes around 75–100 minutes; on summer weekends, with roadworks or on changeover days considerably longer. Instead of driving straight onto the lagoon causeway, it pays to stop at a park & ride in Mestre/Marghera (with tram/bus links), at Fusina (with a seasonal boat link to Dorsoduro) or directly at Tronchetto (currently around €29/24 h, vaporetto connection).
- Route: Bibione → Venice causeway (guide value around 100 km)
- A4 tolls and fuel: check current costs with a route planner
- P+R Mestre/Marghera: often cheaper than Tronchetto; check prices, opening hours, connecting services and the last return with the operator
- P+R Fusina: seasonal vaporetto link towards Zattere — check operation and prices
- Tronchetto: currently around €29/24 h, right on the edge of the lagoon; check availability at peak times
- Best strategy: arrive early in high season
Advantage: flexible timing, plenty of time in Venice, independent of bus timetables. Disadvantage: tolls, hunting for parking, summer traffic jams, higher total costs than the bus. The best parking option depends on budget, time of day and your planned return.
Option 2: ATVO bus towards Venice
ATVO connections between Bibione and Venice or Mestre/Piazzale Roma depend on the season and the timetable. Departure points are various stops in Bibione (Spiaggia, Pineda, Mare); the terminus is usually Piazzale Roma on the edge of the old town. Check journey time, line number, departure points, frequency, first/last services and ticket prices directly with ATVO — as a rough guide, around 2 hours. In the low season the service is often heavily reduced.
Advantage: no changes, no parking stress. Disadvantage: limited departures (especially outside high season), long journey time, and a last return that can be early in the evening depending on the season — for late returns the car or train is more flexible.
Option 3: Bus + train via Latisana or Portogruaro
Bibione has no railway station of its own. The train option is a sensible plan B for later returns: take the bus to the nearest station — Latisana or Portogruaro — and change there to the Trenitalia regional train to Venezia Santa Lucia. Bus and train times need to be coordinated on the day of travel; check line numbers, prices, connection times and the last return with ATVO and Trenitalia.
Advantage: often a later return, arrival right in the heart of Venice (Santa Lucia, Cannaregio). Disadvantage: two changes, waiting time at the station.
Arriving in Venice: Piazzale Roma or Santa Lucia
- Piazzale Roma (bus, car via the causeway) — on the edge of the old town, with vaporetto connections to line 1 (Grand Canal) and line 2 towards St Mark’s Square; a few minutes’ walk to Santa Lucia station.
- Venezia Santa Lucia (train option) — right in the Cannaregio sestiere, around 25–35 min on foot to St Mark’s Square; vaporetto from the Ferrovia pier.
Bibione as a base — an honest assessment
Bibione is primarily a large family beach resort with a long, wide sandy beach, thermal spa facilities, cycle paths and plenty of tourist infrastructure — not a classic sightseeing destination. The beach is often described as around 8 kilometres long; the width and usable beach area vary by section. Bibione is again listed as a Bandiera Blu (Blue Flag) resort in 2026; check individual sections, criteria and services each year.
For a beach week with one Venice day, Bibione works well. For intensive Venice sightseeing the resort is only partly suitable because of the distance and the seasonally early last return — if Venice is your main destination, you are better off booking a night in Venice, Mestre or on the Lido.
- Lido del Faro — unspoilt area at the mouth of the Tagliamento, car-free, reachable through the pine woods or by cycle path
- Faro di Bibione — historic lighthouse on the Tagliamento delta
- Traffic-calmed centre — in high season, central areas become pedestrian and cycle zones at times; note the current rules locally
- Bibione Thermae — thermal wellness, good for bad-weather days
- Weekly market — check the day, location and seasonal times locally or with Bibione/San Michele al Tagliamento

How much time do you get in Venice?
With an early departure from Bibione and a late return, around 8–11 hours in Venice are possible depending on the mode of transport (usually most with the car, as the bus finishes earlier). A realistic programme is St Mark’s Square, one main ticketed sight (Doge’s Palace or the paid areas of St Mark’s Basilica), Rialto and a Grand Canal ride. St Mark’s Basilica, the Pala d’Oro, the cathedral museum/loggia, the Campanile and the Doge’s Palace each have their own ticket and time-slot systems — book time slots in advance and don’t cram too much into one day. An extra Murano detour only makes sense with a car return and an early start.
| Phase | Programme |
|---|---|
| Morning arrival | Car/bus to Venice, vaporetto towards St Mark’s Square |
| Morning | St Mark’s Square + one main ticketed sight (Doge’s Palace or St Mark’s Basilica areas, with pre-booked time slots) |
| Midday | Lunch at a bacaro in the Castello sestiere |
| Afternoon | Walk to Rialto, Grand Canal ride on line 1 or 2 |
| Early evening | Aperitivo in Cannaregio, then back in good time for the last return |
Frequently asked questions about the Bibione → Venice day trip
Which connection from Bibione to Venice is best?
For many travellers car + park & ride is the most flexible (late return possible). Without a car: the ATVO bus towards Piazzale Roma (check the timetable; the last return can be early depending on season). For late returns: bus + train via Latisana/Portogruaro. Check journey times and prices with ATVO/Trenitalia.
How long does the journey from Bibione to Venice take?
Guide values: car via the A4 around 75–100 min without traffic plus park & ride; ATVO bus around 2 hours; bus + train via Latisana/Portogruaro around 2–2.5 hours in total.
When does the first/last bus leave?
First and last departures vary considerably by season; in the low season the bus service is reduced and the direct bus stops early in the evening. Current timetables on atvo.it and trenitalia.com. If you want to stay longer in Venice, use the train via Latisana/Portogruaro or the car.
How much does the Bibione → Venice day trip cost?
Costs vary by mode of transport, tickets and booking time. ATVO bus and train are in the low double digits per person; add vaporetto tickets in Venice (single €9.50, 24-hour pass €25). Car plus park & ride depends on the car park and tolls. On designated days the access fee (€5/€10) comes on top. Check current fares with the operators.
Do I have to pay the 2026 access fee as a Bibione holidaymaker?
If your travel day falls within the 60 designated days (3 April – 26 July 2026, 8:30am–4pm) and you visit the historic centre: yes. The exemption for overnight guests only applies to registered accommodation within the municipality of Venice — Bibione belongs to the municipality of San Michele al Tagliamento. Book in advance via cda.ve.it (€5 if paid no later than the fourth day before your visit, €10 after that).
How far is Bibione from Venice?
By car via the A4, as a guide, around 100 km / a good hour’s drive without traffic; by bus longer because of the stops. Bibione lies north-east of Venice, on the border with Friuli Venezia Giulia.
Is Bibione worth it as a base for Venice sightseeing?
Only to a limited extent. Bibione is a classic beach resort. If Venice is your main destination, book a night in Venice or Mestre instead. For a family beach week with one or two Venice days, Bibione works well — most flexibly with car + park & ride.
Where is the best place to park in Venice?
P+R car parks in Mestre/Marghera with tram/bus links are cheaper; right on the edge of the lagoon there is Tronchetto (currently around €29/24 h, vaporetto connection); alternatively Fusina with a vaporetto link towards Zattere. Check prices, opening hours and connecting services with the operator in advance. You cannot park in Venice itself.
Is there a direct train from Bibione?
No. Bibione has no railway station of its own. The nearest stations are Latisana and Portogruaro (both reachable by bus). From there, Trenitalia regional trains run to Venezia Santa Lucia. Check times and frequency with ATVO/Trenitalia.
Are dogs and pushchairs allowed?
Dogs, pushchairs and luggage are subject to the current ATVO, Trenitalia and ACTV rules. A muzzle/lead or transport box may be required; on full vehicles staff may impose restrictions. Check the current rules before your travel day.
What about storms or bad weather?
Bus, train and car are less wave-dependent than boat connections, but can be affected by storms, strikes, traffic disruption, fog or roadworks. In Venice, strong wind, fog or high water can affect ACTV lines, piers and outdoor areas; during acqua alta keep an eye on the live water levels. Check current notices.
