San Donà di Piave: Thursday Market and Hinterland Tips

San Donà di Piave is the largest town in the Venetian hinterland between Jesolo and Caorle — it sits on the river Piave, which gave it its name. For beach holidaymakers in Jesolo, Cavallino-Treporti, Caorle or Eraclea Mare, San Donà is the Thursday market address: one of the biggest weekly markets in the eastern Veneto, easily reached in 20–30 minutes by car.

What else San Donà di Piave offers

Unlike Portogruaro, San Donà is not a medieval town — it was almost completely rebuilt after the First World War. What remains: a lively town centre with cafés and restaurants along Piazza Indipendenza, the Galleria Comunale d’Arte and the park on the bank of the Piave. A town visit is worthwhile on market days, when there is a buzz anyway — as a pure sightseeing destination the town is unspectacular.

San Donà di Piave has a station on the Venice–Trieste line — directly connected with Venice Mestre (25 minutes) and Portogruaro (15 minutes). So if you have no car and are coming from the Lido di Venezia or from Venice, you can reach the market by train.

Local specialities at the market

In the food section of the Thursday market you will find products from the Piave river basin, which is agriculturally very rich: Radicchio Trevigiano IGP (in winter), white asparagus from Cimadolmo IGP (spring), the cheese Casatella Trevigiana DOP and wines from the Piave DOC (Refosco, Raboso, Friulano). Plus regional salumi such as soppressa veneta. Worth a shopping trip if you have a holiday house or a campsite kitchen.

When is San Donà worth it?

Worth it for …

  • A Thursday day trip from Jesolo, Cavallino or Eraclea Mare
  • Market shopping with a bigger choice than in the beach resort
  • A combined day: market in the morning, Venice-Mestre by train in the afternoon
  • Getting to know cheese, wine and cured meats from the Piave valley

Less useful if …

  • you expect a historic old-town atmosphere (try Portogruaro instead)
  • you travel at the weekend — the town is mainly lively on weekdays
  • you do not speak Italian and hope for German or English signage
