Which of the two lines should I take?

The short answer: it doesn’t matter — both arrive at the same Murano pier and both take roughly the same time. The difference lies in the direction in which they circle the main island:

  • Line 4.1: usually starts at F.te Nove and heads straight to Murano. Fastest from the northern edge (Cannaregio).
  • Line 4.2: usually starts at P.le Roma and sweeps round towards F.te Nove and on to Murano. More sensible from the station (Ferrovia) — no change needed.

In practice: if you board at P.le Roma or Ferrovia, 4.2 is your boat. If you are staying near Fondamente Nove (northern Cannaregio) or have already walked past the Rialto, take 4.1.

Murano has five vaporetto piers along the island — all served by lines 4.1/4.2:

  • Murano Colonna: northernmost stop, near the lighthouse.
  • Murano Faro: at the glass landmark, the central arrival point.

Lines 4.1/4.2 run every 10 minutes during the day — alternating, so one of the two variants departs every 5 minutes. First departure around 6:00 in the morning, last around 23:00. In low season (November–March) the frequency drops to every 20 minutes.

Journey time: P.le Roma → Murano Museo about 30 minutes (4.2). F.te Nove → Murano Faro about 10 minutes (4.1). If you are staying in the Cannaregio hotel district, 4.1 gets you to Murano much faster.
