In brief: Cavallino-Treporti has the typical upper-Adriatic climate — warm summers with water temperatures of 24–26 °C in high summer, mild winters. Lying between the lagoon and the open Adriatic, the peninsula has a particular wind exposure: the bora from the north-east and the sirocco from the south both hit it directly. Important if you plan to take the vaporetto to Venice: in wind over 30 km/h line 14 can run late, and from 40 km/h the service is partly suspended. You can see the live wind levels in the block above.

Wind and fast-boat suitability

The bora

The bora is a cold, dry katabatic wind from the north-east that occurs mainly in spring and autumn. In a stronger bora (over 40 km/h): vaporetto line 14 is partly suspended (the lagoon-to-Adriatic crossing becomes too rough), beach umbrellas must be folded away, and the Punta Sabbioni lighthouse area is unsheltered. The upside on bora days: exceptionally clear views — from Punta Sabbioni you can see the campanile of San Marco across the lagoon.

When do vaporetto connections become critical?

  • Up to 25 km/h wind: vaporetto line 14 runs as scheduled
  • 25–35 km/h: possible delays of 10–20 minutes, but the service runs
  • 35–45 km/h: individual sailings may be cancelled, mainly in the afternoon
  • Over 45 km/h: line 14 is usually suspended completely — the alternative is the ATVO bus to Piazzale Roma, or move your Venice day trip to another day

The live block above shows the current wind speed with a clear rating. ARPAV usually announces bora phases 24 hours ahead — if you plan a Venice trip the next day, check the forecast.

The sirocco

The sirocco is a warm south-south-easterly wind from North Africa. Under sirocco the heat feels heavier. It matters for the lagoon side of Cavallino-Treporti: the sirocco pushes Adriatic water into the lagoon and can raise the water level on the Treporti side (lagoon harbour, Sant’Erasmo pier). The direct Adriatic beach area is not affected.
